About Funky Spaces

Funky Spaces is a platform for work, event and community spaces with a commitment to 'doing good' and a certain sparkle that makes them special. Coordinated by change agency modoto it showcases some of the best flexible and affordable offices, hot desks and meeting rooms our city has to offer.

This is 'a learning not a listing' - no mere directory.  Funky Space members are committed to meeting up, learning from and supporting each other. Our collective aim is to make sure people who need Funky Space, can find the one most suited to their needs.  Every Funky Space has been vetted and rated for their 'funk' factor. To be on our site spaces need to offer at least four out of five of the following:

  • Affordable rents and flexible terms
  • Welcoming and good at mixing up different kinds of work/people
  • Supportive, collaborative, positive and accommodating for different needs
  • Comfortable, quirky and interesting physical spaces
  • To serve a purpose for the common good rather than just make money
Funky Space members who don't match up, or fail to get actively involved don't get their membership renewed.

The full agreement can be viewed here

9 Bath Buildings

Bath Buildings is a creative centre just off Cheltenham Road.  We host an array of talent including design, music, photography, carpentry alongside more office based start-ups and small businesses.

It's a two storey building with a large communal workspace shared by all at the centre, surrounded by 16 studios. We allow 24 hour access and it has recently been completely refitted, with added facilities including a shower and kitchen.  We're tucked away in a quiet oasis out of view of the main road, directly behind Kwik Fit and have a bike rack right outside the front door.

Studio space is occupied on a license basis with a minimum of 12 months in the first instance. People are welcome to share studios to make the space even more affordable.

We are proud of the sense of creative sharing and support that has blossomed so quickly in our space - a real credit to the occupiers.

Junction 3 Library (BS5)

Junction 3 is a not for profit space run purely in the interests of the community. This means it holds itself to high standards in regards to the inclusion of all members of society. There is a 50% reduction of room fees for charities based in Bristol or for not for profit groups that are run for the benefit of the people of Bristol. This allows groups that do genuine good for our local community to have access to our state of the art equipment.

The building is accessible to people with a variety of different disabilities and trained librarians are on hand to help users access anything they need. The space is good for mixing people as Easton is already an incredibly diverse community but also because the layout of the rooms means that groups will almost undoubtedly interact. The rooms currently have a varied clientele and are used from everything from community meetings to English lessons and business events.

Weddings can be held here (for those who don't drink alcohol) as there is plenty of room for caterers to set up as well as plenty of space for guests. It is a versatile space with one room that can be used either as one large room or two small rooms depending on the needs of the users. It is also a relatively neutral space which makes it perfect for business events but also means it can be easily decorated to suit the mood of whatever event takes place there. Children are more than welcome and can also enjoy the large children’s section in the library, which even has a slide.

Facilities
We have four training rooms with space for between 20 and 60 people, there's an ICT training suite with room for up to 40, and a quiet room. Event hire includes the use of interactive smart boards, a ceiling mounted data projector with speakers, hearing induction loop, free WiFi and a 42" LCD display. There are up to 11 laptops available, and outside caterers are permitted. The library is fully accessible, with a lift and disabled toilets.

Both buildings are fully accessible and all rooms are situated on ground level.

There are automatic doors and ramps making access to the buildings easier and two rooms have hearing loops. We provide high speed internet connection, refreshments, projection and training equipment. There are printing, photocopying, e-mail and fax facilities in the main reception office. Catering can be arranged to suit your requirements. The GreenHouse (BS3)

The GreenHouse is the head office/conference centre of the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens – a national charity that works to support, promote and represent community-led farms and gardens across the UK.

Built in 1996 based on the Segal method, a low energy form of construction, using indigenous timber and featuring tree trunk columns. The roof has a meadow of grass and wildflowers offering a wildlife habitat for bees, butterflies and birds in an urban environment. The building is set in a small demonstration garden with a wildlife pond.

The Conference Room
is fully accessible, can seat up to 40 people and is ideal for training events, meetings and AGMs (unfortunately we are not available for parties). The room benefits from high ceilings, natural wood flooring and plenty of windows providing natural light. We are able to offer refreshments to suit your needs and can organise catering using local businesses. It is our policy to use fair-trade and organic products wherever possible.  Contact us to check availability, prices, and to request a room hire pack and booking form.

The Vassall Centre (BS16)

The Vassall Centre is one of the earliest barrier free workplaces in the UK, having been extensively renovated in the last 25 years. The single storey building has been made accessible for those with a wide range of difficulties. The building is occupied by more than 15 organisations as tenants. They are predominantly charities and social enterprises and with the ever busy Conference Centre, the building is a vibrant and very popular social hub. More than 25,000 people from all walks of life will use the Conference Centre every year.

There is an average of 5 events a day. We have four meeting rooms (the Oldbury Court Room can be divided into two separate rooms) of varying sizes for groups of 2 - 30. The Wardrobe Theatre (BS2)

We built this theatre from scratch after having a much smaller space above a pub for over 4 years. It has been specifically designed to be a welcoming, intimate and flexible space with a lot of quirky character. It's like stepping into a wardrobe! It has an L shaped seating back which can fit up to 100 people. The stage area is approx 4.5m x 4.5m. It can be used for performances, talks, film screenings, conferences, meetings, launches etc. There are stage lights and a PA system if needed. There is also an adjacent bathroom with dressing room facilities.

We are a non-profit organisation and all the money made from renting the space out goes directly into the theatre for the community of Bristol and want to make that as accessible and affordable as possible. Charges depend on the income of the user. The space is available during the day and is next to The Old Market Assembly which is a cafe/bar/restaurant run by the team behind The Canteen and No 1. Harbourside. This attracts a huge range of people to the venue who use the space during the day for work/leisure. We are an affordable/accessible theatre who highly value our mixed audience demographic. We are a creative venture who encourage people to take risks in our space, are always open and excited to discuss ideas with people wanting to use the space in different ways.

Additional facilities:

Free tea/coffee making facilities
